Alcohol Detox

What does it mean to enter an alcohol detox?

For anyone who has been caught in the trap of alcohol addiction for any length of time will know how hard it is to stop drinking.

First there is the nightmare of the withdraw to face such as:

Once the withdrawals are over, the next question is “how to stay off the stuff for good”?

One answer to staying off alcohol and getting your life back under control is a thoroughly completed alcohol detox.

The definition of detoxification is as follows: "A treatment for addiction to drugs or alcohol intended to rid the body of the addictive substances, and the physiological and mental readjustment that accompanies the process."

In the definition above we emphasise: “intended to rid the body of the addictive substances”. The purpose of doing an alcohol detox once the withdrawal stage is over ,is to assist a recovering alcoholic to detoxify his or her body of any residual alcohol with the view of increasing their chances of leading a life of abstinence without the usual self-restraint.

Alcoholism always requires a withdrawal process before beginning any form of  detoxification of the body and eventual recovery.

Without an alcohol detox residuals in the form of “metabolites” may remain in the body, and alcohol cravings may continue to effect a person and hinder a full recovery from the addiction, leaving a person potentially prone to relapsing back into the life of chaos they almost left behind.

Note. Withdrawing from alcohol should be done under the care of a licensed medical practitioner. A person trying to a withdrawal or a home alcohol detox after several years of heavy alcohol consumption, unassisted and without the correct professional help, may be entering into dangerous waters, that, apart from serious physical, psychological, and emotional consequences, can also be life threatening.

Therefore an alcohol detox without professional support must not be attempted.

Each alcohol detox is unique to the individual in regards to the duration of time, intensity of discomfort, if any, and including requirements for special care and attention.

Alcohol Detox Symptoms

The physical and emotional symptoms of an alcohol detox are generally considerably milder than those experienced during alcohol withdrawals, however an effective alcohol detox should only be done under the guide of a specialised detoxification counsellor and once medical approval from a qualified physician has been granted.

Although results can vary from person to person, people who have successfully completed an effective alcohol detox have reported that they feel much better, stronger, brighter, more alert, confident, calmer, have a resurgence of energy and have a renewed optimism about their future.
